The first season of the animated television series, Aqua Teen Hunger Force originally aired in the United States. Season one unofficially started on December 30, 2000 with the unannounced stealth airing of "Rabbot" on Cartoon Network. Season one officially began one week after the official launch of Adult Swim, on September 9, 2001 with "Escape from Leprechaupolis", and ended with "Cybernetic Ghost of Christmas Past from the Future" on December 29, 2002, with a total of eighteen episodes.
The first sixteen episodes from season one were released on the Volume One DVD on November 18, 2003, the two remaining episodes were released on the Volume Two DVD on July 20, 2004. In addition to being available on DVD, all episodes from season one are available on iTunes and the "Build Your Own DVD" feature on Adultswim.com
Production
All episodes in season one were written and directed by series creators Matt Maiellaro and Dave Willis. The first episode from this season, "Rabbot" originally aired in the United States on Cartoon Network, unannounced, on December 30, 2000. The remaining episodes from this season originally aired on Cartoon Network's late night programming block, Adult Swim. All episodes from this season are rated either TV-14 or TV-PG.
The first three episodes of season one feature Master Shake, Frylock, and Meatwad as detectives. After three episodes, this premise and the use of the name by the characters were dropped. The premise was a trick that had been added to appease Cartoon Network executives, who "didn't want to air a show about food just going around and doing random stuff". In the show itself, Frylock mentions that they stopped fighting crime because "that wasn't making us a whole lot of money". In 2010 it was confirmed that the concept of the Aqua Teens being detectives will be revisited in the upcoming season eight.
Season one features guest appearances by Scott Hilley, Andy Merrill, H. Jon Benjamin, Don Kennedy, Todd Field, David Cross, Matt Harrigan, Tom Clark, Todd Hanson, Todd Barry, Vishal Roney, and Glenn Danzig.
Overview
Season one marks the first official appearances of Master Shake, Frylock, and Meatwad, who first made unofficial rough-cut appearances in the Space Ghost Coast to Coast episode, "Baffler Meal". This season also marks the first appearance of their next door neighbor, Carl Brutananadilewski, as well as a number of recurring characters such as Dr. Weird, Steve, Ignignokt, Err, Oglethorpe, Emory, MC Pee Pants, Cybernetic Ghost of Christmas Past from the Future, and George Lowe.
Season one started with "Rabbot", which originally aired on December 30, 2000 unannounced at 5:00 am. There are many differences from the original "stealth" broadcast of this episode and the final cut. There was no theme song or opening titles, the segues that cut to another scene were also different - instead of Schooly D narrating over some rap music, they showed the old "outer space zoom" segue from the Hanna-Barbera Superfriends cartoon, with the Aqua Teen Hunger Force (instrumental) theme music played over it.
In the cold open, after the Rabbot escapes, Dr. Weird says "Unleash the mechanical frog!" and the giant garage door opens again, showing a huge mechanical frog. There was also a scene of Master Shake sitting in the hair salon talking about things he hates. After Meatwad says "everyone likes dancing" it cuts to Shake getting his hair done and saying "..And I HATE dancing. It's one of my LEAST favorite things to do. Other things I hate are work, exercise, people, stupid people—".
