Anna Levinson
Soource: Biography by herself, she is (almost) every day at the institute
Anna Levinson was born on January 8, 1939 in Tel-Aviv and is a German zoologist, specialized in general and applied entomology. She lives with her husband Hermann Levinson in Starnberg and has been working at the Max Planck Institute for Behavioral Physiology since 1971, and at the Max Planck Institute for Ornithology since 2004 in Seewiesen and Erling (Upper Bavaria, Germany).

Life and work
Anna Levinson is daughter of the Engineer Isaac Bar-Ilan and the Mathematician Frieda Bar-Ilan. After graduating from a mathematically - and scientifically oriented Gymnasium, she earned a teaching diploma and taught biology at a junior High School.
At the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, she studied botany, zoology, parasitology and chemistry, and graduated with the degree of M.Sc. (Magister Scientiarum) from the Faculty of Science of the above University in 1964. As a part of her M.Sc. research, she investigated the sound patterns and corresponding behavioural responses produced by Locusta migratoria and Schistocerca gregaria (Acrididae, Caelifera) and also studied the causative factors of insect diapause. Anna Levinson performed doctoral research under the supervision of Professors R.Galun and E.Rivnay on the possible employment of insect attractants and repellents for suppression of the density of harmful insect populations, particularly pf the phytophagous cotton leafworm Spodoptera littoralis (Noctuidae,Lepidoptera), the haematophagous bedbug Cimex lectularius (Cimicidae,Hemiptera) as well as the seed feeding khapra beetle Trogoderma granarium (Dermestidae,Coleoptera) and eventually received the degree of Ph.D. from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem in 1972.
In 1971 she became a research associate of the Max Planck Institute for Behavioural Physiology (Seewiesen, Upper Bavaria) and performed research, together with Hermann Levinson, on nutritional and sensory physiology of harmful insect and mite species, particularly on the molecular structure and mode of action of kairomones, sex pheromones, optical and tactile stimuli. Since 1985, Anna Levinson and Hermann Levinson are team-working on ethnozoology of arthropod species prevalent in the ancient Orient and classical Antiquity.
Anna Levinson has collaborated with national and international research teams, investigating the employment of pheromone traps for stored product beetles and moths, including khapra beetles, hide beetles, tobacco beetles, grain moths, meal moths, flour moths, tobacco moths as well as almond moths. These traps were eventually patented in various countries and are routinely used so far. They significantly reduce the number of necessary insecticidal treatments.
Anna Levinson is a member of the German Society of general and applied Entomology (DGaaE) as well as the Entomological Society of Munich (MEG). She was nominated by the International Biographical Centre of Cambridge (England) as a leading scientist of the world (2OO6) and also obtained the Karl Leopold Escherich-Medal rendered by DGaaE, the German Society of general and applied Entomology (2OO7).
