Kesselbrink

The Kesselbrink is a central place in the city center of Bielefeld. It is in the northeast of the city center nearby of the Jahnplatz.

History

The place large in the eastern city center lain a hectare served first as Viehweide. Each member of the citizenry was obligated to regard at least one animal in order to receive dung as the crop farming. Thus the today's name developed itself, of Köttelbrink derives. Supraregional meaning received the place, when one discovered 1666 source of welfare, which triumphed however fast. When Bielefeld became 1713 garrison town, the Kesselbrink served as Drilling place, remained thereby however in the possession of the citizenry.

By the increasing industrialization and thus accompanying population growth became the place soon center of the city. First 1884 established Gymnasium Bielefeld was at the corner Kesselbrink/Heeper road. From now on the place served as Festplatz for People celebrations and Circus conceptions.

Beginning by the 20. Century the place was transformed by unemployed persons into a park. 1905 carried Arminia Bielefeld here its first soccer games out. There were first plans for the land development of the place to the 1920er year. A library, a house of the education, the art and welfare were planned, were however not realized due to that using economic crisis.

In National socialism became the place as Parade place used. In the years 1941 and 1942 Jews, by the national socialists in the Kyffhäuser restaurant, were collected homosexual ones and other unwanted persons before them deportiert became. Today a Gedenktafel reminds at the main station in particular of the victims.


After the war 1961 with the building of at that time largest became Underground parking Germany and the building that Police headquarters begun. Into the 1960er years took place also the mechanism of a central Bus station. The highest building of Bielefeld, the 18-stöckige communications multistoried building, was finished 1974. There was renewed planning to a transformation of the place end of the 1980er years, which were however never converted. Until October 1986 the streetcar line 3 drove past at the Kesselbrink. In the 90's the regional bus station was shifted to the main station. At the edge of the place from the outline ramshackle of the indoor swimming pool become a large open space resulted.

The place is served today by numerous Buslinien and is terminator point that City bus line 28.

Planning

At present a part of the place for the weekly market is used and partially as Skateanlage. In the context of the agenda 21 the place is to be transformed, become it 1.6 million euro for the revaluation of the place as well as the reorganization of the ramshackle underground parking intended.
