Air Marshal John Paul Harvey AM (b. 4 September 1954) is a senior officer in the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF). He has held the position of Chief Capability Development Group from October 2010.
Military career
John Harvey joined the Royal Australian Air Force in 1977 and conducted navigator training at RAAF Base East Sale before being posted to Canberra bomber aircraft at RAAF Base Amberley. After a four year tour on Canberra aircraft he spent one year as the escort officer to the Minister for Defence and then completed specialist weapons training and conversion training on the F-111 aircraft.
After a three years flying F-111s Harvey completed the Royal Air Force Aero Systems Course and on his return to Australia he received a three year posting in Technical Intelligence at the Joint Intelligence Organisation. Harvey was then posted to the United States as the Flight Test Director for the F-111 Avionics Update Project, working with the United States Air Force on the F-111 Avionics Modernization Program.
On return from the United States he was posted to the Australian Department of Defence as an Air Warfare Advisor in the Force Development and Analysis Division. He then completed a one year exchange posting with the New Zealand Ministry of Defence before being appointed as a Visiting Fellow at the Strategic and Defence Studies Centre at the Australian National University. After the fellowship position he was posted as Director of the RAAF Air Power Studies Centre and then posted as Defence Attaché Southern Europe, based in Rome and accredited to Italy, Israel, Greece and Turkey.
On return from Italy he was appointed as a Deputy Director at the Australian Defence College and then Director of Military Strategy at Australian Defence Headquarters before being promoted to Air Commodore and posted as Director General Aerospace Development. On 2 September 2002 he was posted as Director General of the New Air Combat Capability still holding the rank of Air Commodore.
John Harvey was promoted to Air Vice Marshal on the 30 November 2006 to become the Program Manager of the New Air Combat Capability within the Defence Materiel Organisation.
On 26 January 2008 (Australia Day Honours), Harvey was made a Member of the Order of Australia for his service as Program Manager.
In October 2010, following the resignation of Vice Admiral Matt Tripovich, Harvey was promoted to the rank of Air Marshal and appointed as Chief Capability Development Group.
Personal life
John Harvey has degrees in Architecture (University of New South Wales), Psychology and Information Science. He is married to Sue and has two daughters, Jo and Mary. His hobbies include Tae Kwon Do, swimming and backpacking.
