Yushu County (Tibetan: ཡུལ་ཤུལ་རྫོང།, ZYPY: Yüxü Zong; Chinese: 玉树县) is a county of Yushu Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture in the southernmost part of Qinghai province, Western China. It comprises a surface area of 13,462 square kilometres (5,198 sq mi). In 2000, the county's population was 77,854.
The county seat is the town of Gyêgu (Jiegu), built in the valley of the (Tibetan: དཔལ་ཆུ།, Wylie: dpal chu, ZYPY: Bä Qu; Chinese: 巴塘河), a right tributary of the Dri (Tongtian) River, which becomes the Yangtze River downstream.
Geography and climate
With an elevation of around 3,700 metres (12,000 ft), Yushu County has an alpine subarctic climate (Köppen Dwc), with long, cold, very dry winters, and short, rainy, and mild summers. The monthly daily mean temperature in January, the coldest month, is −7.6 °C (18.3 °F), while the same figure for July, the warmest month, is 12.7 °C (54.9 °F); the year averages out at 3.22 °C (37.8 °F). Most of the annual precipitation is delivered from June to September.
Transportation
The county is served by the China National Highway 214 and the recently constructed (opened 2009) Yushu Batang Airport.
